Tell the templater about radiators, coat rails and occupied corners

Drawings of family kitchens leave out the radiator under the window, the coat rail on the peninsula cheek, the dog bed that lives where a stool was drawn, and the blackboard on the end panel. Then the template arrives and has to negotiate all of them. Kitchen Worktops Plus wants those thieves named before anyone cuts a sheet. The radiator under the window is not a later problem

Worktops want to finish at a window with a tidy return. Radiators want to sit exactly there, throwing heat at the very junction that hates being cooked. If the radiator is staying, the template must stop, notch or sit high enough that the valve still turns. If the radiator is leaving next year, say so now, or you will own a worktop shaped around a ghost you then cannot fill.

Pipes on the wall behind a planned upstand are the same class of thief. A family utility often shares that wall. • Say whether each radiator is staying, moving, or a next-year job.

Coats stop in the kitchen, whether the plan admits it or not

A rail on the end of a peninsula, hooks on a cheek, a peg board beside the back door — all of them steal the last eighty millimetres of a return or stop a waterfall dead. If the rail is staying, the worktop cannot pretend the cheek is a show face. Template to the rail, or move the rail before the measure, but do not surprise the fitter with six hooks and a wet weather of parkas.

Overhangs next to hooks collect sleeves and knock cups. A slightly shorter return with a dedicated peg wall often behaves better than a heroic waterfall that cannot accept a single coat. This is not a style defeat. It is a house that has children.

Dog beds, baskets and the floor that is already taken

A dog bed drawn as empty floor on a plan is still a dog bed. Templating around it means someone has to move it, and fitting around it means the fitter needs a clear aisle. If the bed has a permanent home against a peninsula, the overhang on that side is not a seating overhang. It is a roof over a pet. Say so. Knee space, support brackets and a radius change when a Labrador lives there instead of a stool.

Laundry baskets, a blackboard on an end panel and a charging shelf for school tablets are the same species of object: they look like clutter and they are actually layout. • Move the dog bed for the measure, then put it back and photograph the real aisle.
• Tell the templater which hooks and rails are permanent.

Give the template the crowded truth

Empty the run for the measure, but walk the templater through what normally lives there. Point at the radiator, the rail, the bed and the high chair parking. A family kitchen is a set of occupied corners, and a worktop that respects them will feel larger than a worktop that pretends they were never there.
