Template the farmhouse sink as furniture, not as a later hole
A deep ceramic bowl bullies the worktop around it. The aperture, the front rail and the tap deck belong on the measure, not on a variation after the sheet is cut.
A farmhouse sink is a piece of furniture that happens to hold water. It does not drop into a polite undermount hole. Kitchen Worktops Plus wants that bully on the template, not discovered after the sheet is already cut for a different bowl. The front rail, the tap deck and the way the solid dies into the ceramic all change if the Belfast sits proud of the doors. Family kitchens love these sinks. They also punish a late decision about them.
The bowl has to be a known object on measuring day
Cardboard cut-outs lie. Ceramic rims vary, and a farmhouse front that looks square in a photograph often has a lip the worktop has to kiss. If the sink is not on site, bring the manufacturer's drawing and the actual model number, not a cousin from the same range. A ten-millimetre miss on the rail is how a family sink looks as if a different trade dropped it in.
Undermounts and farmhouses are different jobs. One hides under a polished aperture. The other needs the solid to stop, return, or sit as a thin deck behind a proud ceramic. Mixing that language on a quote is how you get the wrong edge. Kitchen Worktops Plus names the sink type in the first figure so nobody fabricates a family bowl as if it were a stainless inset.
- Have the sink in the room, or a dimensioned drawing with the exact model.
- Say whether the front is proud, flush, or slightly proud of the doors.
- Confirm tap holes in the worktop, in the ceramic, or in a bridge mixer.
Children lean on the rail; the rail has to feel like a worktop
A deep bowl invites leaning. Paintbrushes get washed, lunchboxes get rinsed, and someone will sit their weight on the front while they talk. That remaining solid needs enough meat to feel like a worktop, not like a biscuit. If the ceramic eats the depth, the run in front of the sink becomes a trap. Move the bowl, thicken the build-up, or accept a wider sink cabinet before anyone cuts.
Tap holes in a skinny deck behind a farmhouse are a classic failure. Boiling-water taps need a larger opening and a clear sweep. If the deck is too narrow, put the tap to one side or choose a sink with a proper tap platform. Do not squeeze a family tap into a leftover strip and hope.
Water will live at the junction every day
A farmhouse that sits a millimetre proud needs a joint you can wipe, not a dirt trench. The template should record how far the worktop overlaps, where it stops short, and whether a small upstand returns at the sides. These are family details because this sink will see more pasta water than a showroom bowl ever does. Silicone is not a substitute for a measured overlap.
Waste pipes and dishwasher hoses steal space under a deep sink. Mention the dishwasher on the measure if it sits beside the bowl. A fitter who only thinks about the worktop will not protect the rail you were counting on. Kitchen Worktops Plus treats the sink cabinet as part of the template, not as someone else's problem.
- Record the overlap at the front, back and both sides, in millimetres.
- Plan the tap sweep so a full kettle still fits under the spout.
- Note dishwasher, food-waste unit and anything else that crowds the cabinet.
Do not add a Belfast after the sheet has already left
Changing from a stainless inset to a farmhouse once the template has gone is how a family kitchen loses a week and a rail. If you even might want the ceramic, say so before the measure. It is cheaper to template for the larger interruption and fit a smaller sink later than to enlarge a hole that was never meant to be a piece of furniture.
Once the sink type is locked, stop browsing bowls that are almost the same. Kitchen Worktops Plus would rather one decided ceramic, cut correctly, than a prettier farmhouse that needs a different aperture.
